Travel accessories

Clothing:

  • Light cotton shirts
  • short / long trousers in camouflage colors (beige and brown, if possible not white or black)
  • Light but warm jacket / sweater for the cooler African evenings
  • Comfortable shoes with high bootleg / sandals
  • Sunhat with a wide brim
  • Sunglasses
  • Raincoat
  • Swimming togs

Traveling gear:

  • Small, dust tight backpack (this is the only allowed gear in small aeroplanes e.g. for a trip into the Ocavango Delta)

Toilet articles:

  • Autan / Tabard / OFF / Lotion / Spray / Mosquito repellant
  • Sun block with a high factor (15+ or higher)
  • Lip balm

Physical health:

  • Malaria tablets
  • vaccinations for specific regions during specific times of the year (more information through the tropical institute or medical doctor)
  • Aqua pure tablets for purifying drinking water

Electricity / Power:

  • Adapter is necessary for hotels, lodges and camping areas. It is recommended to buy these in southern Africa because of the compatibility. Many camps are connected to solar energy or generators. Some have absolute no electricity.

Travel documents:

  • valid passport / valid for at least six months
  • visa with multiple entries where necessary (e.g. Mozambique)

Currency:

  • VISA / Mastercard acceptable in most hotels, lodges & supermarkets
  • US$ is a favored currency
  • ZAR Rand also accepted in Namibia
  • Pula in Botswana
  • Zimbabwe Dollars in Zimbabwe
  • No traveler cheque!

Accessories:

  • Good quality binoculars
  • book to identify bird species and mammels in southern Africa
  • Camera with flashlight
  • video camera
  • enough batteries and film reel
  • A telephoto lens is recommended
